(Saint John, NB): The Saint John Mill Rats handed the division leading Halifax Rainmen their 3rd loss on the season, 98-91, at Harbour Station.
The Mill Rats beat the Hurricanes twice in as many games, winning the home and away series 2-0. Saint John now trails Halifax by 1/2 a game for first place in the Atlantic Division. The Mill Rats have now won 3 out of 4 games.
The Hurricanes were looking to bounce back after losing at home last night, and led 27-23 after the 1st quarter. Saint John's defense, anchored by 6'11 Anthony Stover, held the Hurricanes to just 12 second quarter points. This allowed Saint John to lead 42-39 at the half.
Saint John seized control in the 3rd quarter with a 26-19 run to lead 68-58 going into the final quarter. But Halifax fought back and eventually cut the deficit to 80-78, but Doug Herring Jr drained a three pointer off a pass from Stover who grabbed an offensive rebound. That made the score 83-78 and the Mill Rats maintained a margin until Halifax was forced to foul to stop the clock.
"We are starting to play defense the way I like my teams to," said Mill Rats Head Coach Rob Spon. "Holding a tough front line of Halifax to a low shooting percentage enabled us to win this game."
Herring Jr led the scoring with 22 points, Ricky Volcy 19, and Corey Allmond 18. New additions Johnny Mayhane and Garrius Holloman added 7 points a piece. Anthony Criswell led Halifax with 21.
Saint John improves to 6-4 and Halifax drops to 6-3.
